CHILD CARE TIPS FOR PARENTS

PSA #1 - Children spend more time outdoors during the summer months. It’s up to parents to keep them safe at home and at child care. They need to be closely supervised around play equipment and any source of water. Children need frequent reminders of safety rules and guidelines. The Pennsylvania State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.

PSA #2 - Children need to wear helmets and protective pads when riding bikes, rollerblading, or skateboarding. They need regular safety reminders around play equipment, including swings, slides, and climbers. Seat belts and approved car seats must be used for children riding in vehicles. The Pennsylvania State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.

PSA #3 - Children need to be protected from the sun. Provide your child’s caregiver with a sunscreen with a SPF of at least 15 and directions for use. See if there are shady areas for play. Keep kids away from lawn mowers (including riding mowers), hot grills, and barbecues. The Pennsylvania State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.

PSA #4 - Good communication helps children learn and promotes good behavior. Parents and caregivers, take time to listen to children. Look at a child and be at eye level while talking together. Answer all questions. Explain things. Find out what a child likes to do. Praise children when they do something the right way. The Pennsylvania State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.

PSA #5 - Sharing humor and laughing with children can help them feel good, be more willing to talk, and behave better. Encourage a child to talk about what she is doing. Allow a child to finish talking before you talk. The Pennsylvania State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.

PSA #6 - Are you looking for activity and snack ideas for your children? If you have access to the internet, look up the Penn State Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Web site at www.betterkidcare.psu.edu. This Penn State Cooperative Extension program has a variety of educational materials for child care providers, as well as information for parents. There are links to other sites with information about children, including the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare Web site at www.dpw.state.pa.us/Child/
