PSA #1 - Children need many things when they go to child care each day. They need an experienced, loving caregiver who is energetic and flexible. Children need a caregiver who understands how children learn. Children need a place to go that is bright, safe, and clean.

PSA #2 - While at child care, children need a safe space to run and play each day. They need to learn about nature and the world around them. They need to hear stories and act them out. Children benefit from singing songs and playing toy instruments. They need to use their imaginations during pretend play and while creating art.

PSA #3 - Parents, be sure your child is getting what he needs at child care. He needs a variety of activities each day and to be encouraged to try new things. He needs toys and playthings that are right for his age. He needs time and attention from the caregiver.

PSA #4 -There are more and more working parents today. Where are the children while mom and/or dad work? They are at child care centers, in family home child care, or with relatives or neighbors. If you are looking for child care, you have choices for your child. Take time to look at more than one type of child care before deciding.

PSA #5 - You know your child. Think about whether she will do better in a child care center or in a family home. Visit both types to see which one offers all the things your child needs. Ask lots of questions and observe the caregiver with the children. Be sure it’s a place where you want your child to spend many hours when you work. If you do not feel right about a child care, keep on looking.

PSA #6 - There is information for parents, child care providers, and employers on children’s issues from Penn State Cooperative Extension’s Better Kid Care Program on the Web at www.betterkidcare.psu.edu. Caregivers can complete training units via Better Kid Care Distance Education units. The Web site has activity and snack ideas, an e-newsletter, a newsletter for working parents, and much more.
