Child Care Tips for Parents

PSA #1 - What does it take to make child care good?  It takes well-trained caregivers.  Good caregivers have good values, a positive self-image, and get along well with others.  They acquire training on health, safety, and child development issues.  They are registered and licensed by the state.

The Pennsylvania State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.

PSA #2 - Good child care providers enjoy caring for children and are dedicated to doing what is right for each child.  This shows up in the activities they plan and how they treat the children.  They take time to communicate with the parents daily and work with them to be sure the children are receiving the care they need.

PSA #3 - Good child care providers value their profession and take time to meet with other caregivers from time to time to share information about things they have learned about child development and child care.  They are always looking for new ideas and do more than the minimum requirements for training.

PSA #4 -What does your child do all day at child care? Look for a posted daily schedule. There should be a variety of things listed.  Your child may play a game of tag or look for signs of spring outdoors.  He may paint or build with blocks. There will be times to look at books or do a puzzle. The caregiver will read stories and sing songs with the children.

PSA #5 - A good child care provider will help your child learn many things.  Your child will learn to follow directions, take turns, share, and to get along with others. She will learn to dress herself and clean up after playing.  She will learn many new skills.
